The small village Flåm is one of the most popular destinations in Norway and Scandinavia due to its stunning scenery and location.
Most have probably seen spectacular images of the landscape in Western Norway - steep, forested mountainsides that plunge into the blue fjord, waterfalls, narrow fjords and valleys. The famous Flåm railway (Flåmsbana) struggling up the mountain to Myrdal station 867 meters above sea level, the view from viewing platform Stegastein in Aurland. Where is Flåm:
Flåm is a picturesque village located in the Aurlandsfjord, a branch of the Sognefjord in Fjord Norway. It is approximately a 2.5-hour drive from Bergen and about a 5-hour drive from Oslo.

If you are looking to take the train from Oslo to Flåm, you change at Myrdal station. Myrdal is the starting point of the Flåm Railway and runs about 20 kilometers downhill to Flåm which is the last stop. The journey from Oslo to Myrdal takes about 5 hours and from Myrdal to Flåm about one hour. You can also take the train from Bergen (about 2 hours) and change at Myrdal for the Flåm Railway. 2. Fjord cruise in Flåm - see the crown jewel of fjords
The village Flåm is surrounded by high mountains. Although most locals live in the bottom of the valley, you can see houses and farms spectacularly clinging to the mountainside on the most unique places. The fjord is of course an important part of the history of Flåm. It was the fjord that connected the villages to each other and provided the locals with livelihoods in form of fishing. Later the fjord has become a destination in itself and every year thousands of visitors come to experience the unique and unspoiled nature in Flåm, Aurlandsfjorden and Nærøyfjorden.

Flåm is also a natural stop when visiting the many unique places in the immediate vicinity. The Aurlandsfjord who runs into Flåm is also connected with Nærøyfjorden who features on Unesco’s list of World Heritage.
There are many ways to experience both Aurlandsfjorden and Nærøyfjoden. There are several large and small boats that offer fjord tours and every day during the summer there is an express boat from Flåm to Bergen. Flåm is also a popular harbor for cruise ships. Fjord tour hightlights:
The oldest running tour is called Norway in a Nutshell®. The tour starts and ends in Bergen (or Oslo) and is available all year. The tour includes the Flåm Railway and a cruise between Flåm and Gudvangen village.
A great option is also the Guided fjord tour to Nærøyfjorden, Flåm and Stegastein viewpoint. This tour does not include the Flåm Railway, but you get the beautiful fjord cruise from Gudvangen to Flåm instead. Available all year from Bergen. (Fewer departures in winter).
From May till October you can also travel the same route but include white water rafting, cycling or kayaking on the beautiful Nærøyfjord. Hiking in Flåm offers an array of scenic trails for nature lovers. Here a three popular hikes with various difficult levels:
One popular hike is to the Brekkefossen waterfall, where a relatively short and steep ascent rewards hikers with stunning views of the cascading falls and the surrounding valley. The hike takes about 30 minutes there and 30 minutes back.
Another classic is Flåmsdalen valley. You can take the Flåm Railway to Myrdal and walk back down to Flåm. It is relatively easy, but a long walk. The hike is about 18 kilometers and can take between 6-8 hours.
Try the longest zipline in the nordic region! 1381 meters of pure adrenalin with a top speed of 100 kilometers an hour and 305 meters in hight difference! Perfect for the adventure loving visitor!
Practial tip: How to get to Flåm from Bergen:
There are several ways to travel from Bergen to Flåm. Flåm is a populær harbor for cruise ships. However, if you exploring the Fjord Norway region on your own, then these are the most common ways to travel: By train, by boat (summer only), or by car or bus.
1. By train from Bergen or Oslo via Myrdal:
If you travel by Bergensbanen (The Bergen Line) either from Bergen, Voss or Oslo, you change trains at Myrdal to go to Flåm with the Flåm Railway. The Flåm Railway takes you from Myrdal down to the village of Flåm in about one hour. From Bergen via Myrdal to Flåm by train takes about 3 - 3.5 hours.
If you drive from Bergen, it takes about 2.5 hours. If you take the bus, you should allocate a bit longer. The Sognefjord Express runs twice a day between Bergen and Flåm and takes about 3 hours.
