This small-group experience includes 13 generous tastings at locally owned businesses, highlighting the food traditions of Bergen and the best seasonal produce West Norway has to offer.
We begin at Bergen’s famous Fish Market, where you’ll sample fresh, seasonal seafood straight from the fjords. We don’t visit the outdoor market, which is only open in summer, but instead stop by the indoor market, which is used all-year-round by locals. For those who are curious, there is also the opportunity to try whale — a traditional coastal delicacy that has long been part of Norway’s food culture. Along the way, you’ll learn how the sea has shaped Bergen’s identity for generations.
Our next stop is the King Oscar Concept Store, where you’ll discover one of Bergen’s most iconic food brands. Named after King Oscar II of Sweden and Norway, the company has been producing high-quality sardines and seafood products since 1902. At the concept store, you’ll learn about Bergen’s long-standing connection to the fishing industry and the role canned seafood played in bringing Norwegian flavours to tables around the world. You’ll also enjoy a tasting of King Oscar’s products, offering a unique glimpse into an important part of Norway’s culinary history. You even have the opportunity to get your photo on a can, if you wish!
We then visit Fjåk, an award-winning chocolate maker known for bold Nordic flavours. Here you’ll sample their famous brown cheese cheesecake, indulge in what many guests call the best hot chocolate they’ve ever tasted, and enjoy a guided chocolate tasting.
The next stop on our tour is Siderbar, Bergen’s dedicated showcase for the rich cider traditions of West Norway. Surrounded by steep mountains and deep fjords, the region’s unique climate produces some of the finest apples in the country, resulting in crisp, complex ciders that have earned international recognition. Here, you’ll learn about the centuries-old cider-making traditions of Hardanger and the surrounding fjord region while sampling a selection of locally produced ciders. This tasting offers a delicious introduction to one of West Norway’s most celebrated and distinctive food and drink traditions.
To round out the tour, we head up to Fløirestauranten, where you’ll savour a seasonal local meat and fish dish, along with a carefully selected meat and cheese platter. You’ll also enjoy a tasting of West Norway’s renowned local apple cider. You’ll get included tickets for the Fløibanen funicular.
Every stop on this tour is independently owned, and every tasting is thoughtfully chosen to reflect Bergen’s culinary heritage and the rhythm of the seasons. Come hungry and leave with a deeper understanding of the food, history and culture that make Bergen so special.
