The old knitwear factory (1858-1989) has now re-opened as a new museum. Visitors can see the whole process from spinning the wool to the finished product

Join us for a tour of Salhus Tricotagefabrik (1859–1989) and learn about the history and importance of the textile industry in Norway. Take in the smells that still linger in the factory after many years of production.

We guide you through the different production processes, from carding and spinning, to winding, knitting and sewing. What does a knitting machine sound and look like? We demonstrate machines that were in use at the factory, which are now used to knit socks and scarves that you can buy in the museum shop.

In our cosy café you can enjoy homemade cakes and sandwiches with a view of Salhusfjorden. There is also a children’s corner with toys and drawing supplies for little ones. Access to the café and the shop is naturally free of charge during our opening hours.

Private events:

The café has large windows facing the sea which makes the room bright and light - especially in the summer. There is also a terrace with table and chairs facing the sea. 

The café has a capacity for 100 seated guests with tables, chairs and crockery provided. There is also a cinema with a projector and screen available (maximum 30 people in cinema setup). The kitchen is unfortunately not suitable for larger event, so we recommend to order food from an outside catering company. 

Reception: maximum 60 people. (For a guided tour, the group is divided into two groups of 30 people.)

The rooms is available for hire outside the museum's regular opening hours.

There are limited tickets available for guided tours, and we encourage visitors to pre-book guided tours.
