West of Bergen lies Øygarden, a place for active and exciting experiences. No need to travel far out of the city to enjoy great activities, nice seafood and hear interesting histories from the war. Øygarden is easily accessible from Bergen, both by bus and car.
From south to north, you can follow the horizon amongst the multitude of islands when island-hopping in Øygarden.
Øygarden is one of the countries' most outstanding places for birdwatching with over 236 different bird-species. In Tjeldstømarka nature reserve there are no less than 195 of them! There is a good chance you get to see the world's largest birds of prey, the White-tailed Eagles, up close.
In this unique realm of islands, the coast is your playground. A variety of activities uses the fascinating coastal landscapes as part of the experience. The accommodation in Glesvær and Panorama Hotell & Resort offer activities such as boat-rental, SUP and RIB-safari.

If you would rather stay outdoors, then storm watching can be an exciting experience. The weather in this area can be rough but the locals have learnt to appreciate the raw natural forces.
At the Coastal Museum in Øygarden you can learn how people lived and survived in this maritime environment from the ice age until the present.

Øygarden is an interesting place to visit and learn about the second world war history. At the North Sea Traffic Museum in Telavåg you can learn about the tragedy that hit this village on the 30th April 1942. The killing of a Norwegian agent and two Gestapo officers triggered the Telavåg tragedy where the whole community was razed to the ground.
Nordsjøfart Museet, the North Sea traffic museum, has a permanent exhibition about the tragedy and the North Sea traffic during the second world war, in addition to temporary exhibitions about the war- and peace-problematics.

In Øygarden you can wake up with a panorama view of the sea from a fisherman’s cabin or a hotel. If you want to experience the coastal culture, the village of Glesvær is a great start. Glesvær was an important place for trading in the old days. Stay at a modern fisherman`s cabin, called rorbu, at Glesvær Rorbu and enjoy nice food at the Glesvær Café.

Some of the most exotic produce in the west of Norway is found on an islet outside Øygarden (about 30 minutes by boat from Bergen). Cornelius Seafood Restaurant is one of Norway’s best seafood restaurants.
