Beautiful nature, local food and charming village life
You are here: Home Region Explore the region Modalen - Small in size, but rich in experiences
Modalen is in many ways western Norway's hidden gem. A lovely place with beautiful nature, local food and charming village life.
Modalen is Norway's second smallest municipality, measured in population. Measured in terms of experiences, Modalen ranks significantly higher.
Modalen is located north-east of Bergen, 1 hour and 25 minutes drive from Bergen. You can also travel by bus from Bergen to Modalen, but be aware that you have to change buses twice, at Knarvik terminal and at Ostereidet. If you have your own boat, there is a harbor at Mobryggja in the center of Mo.
The fjord cruise from Bergen to Mo through Mostraumen has been one of the most popular trips for many years. The tour leaves from Zachariasbryggen in Bergen city center and follows the 27 kilometer long Osterfjord on its way to Mo.
During the cruise, the fjord becomes narrow with steep mountain sides as the boat passes through the shallow stream called Mostraumen. If you want an exclusive experience, you can book a private boat trip to Modalen with See the Fjords.

The Castle is often called the Pulpit Rock in miniature. Norway Mountain Guides offers fjord cruises and guided tours to The Castle from the city center of Bergen.
Another route that offers spectacular views is the trip to Nedstavatnet or Skavlabu. The company called Aktiv i Modalen offers activities if you want to get close to nature and culture in the area. The guide can take you to summer dairies, to the mountains and on local history walks.
Modalen is great for bike riding, and Aktiv i Modalen has bikes for rent. Choose a calm ride along the road or a rougher experience on paths and in steep terrain.

In Modalen you can spend the night right next to the fjord. Mobrygga, at the seaside in Mo, offers accommodation in fishermen's cabins called rorbu. The facility consists of 18 apartments of various sizes and a restaurant by the harbour.
Modalen camping offers parking for caravans and mobile homes. The camp site has electricity and water, and there is a waste disposal facility 200 meters from the parking. Three kilometers outside the center of Mo you can stay at Modalen Guesthouse.
If you like swimming, you’ll feel right at home in Mo. In the middle of the village there is an idyllic sandy beach perfect for a summer swim.
If you prefer the water temperature a bit warmer, then head indoors to Bryggjeslottet. In addition to the pool, there is a bowling alley, library, sports hall, sauna and a gym. All visitors are welcome.
Modalen is located north-east in the area Nordhordland, and is accessible by car from both the E16 and E39. Modalen is a perfect place to stop on a tour of Nordhordland, starting in Bergen.
