Great sport is great entertainment – and Bergen is a city that lives and breathes sport
From football matches at Brann Stadium to intense and entertaining handball, basketball, and volleyball matches in the city’s arenas - in Bergen, there is always an opportunity to be a spectator at an exciting game.
Football - Brann is Bergen’s great pride
Bergen’s pride is without doubt Brann, who play their home matches at Brann Stadium - the heart of football experiences in our city. This classic stadium has been the home ground of Sportsklubben Brann since 1919 and can host more than 16,000 passionate supporters on matchday.
Brann has both men’s and women’s teams competing at the highest level, and in recent years both teams have also played European cup matches against well-known international opponents.
Brann Stadium (or “staddaen” as it is known in the local Bergen dialect) is located just a few minutes from the city centre by the Light Rail (Bybanen), line 1 towards Flesland (stop: Brann stadion).
Handball, basketball, and volleyball
As befits a true sports city, Bergen has top-level teams in handball, basketball, and volleyball as well.
Handball
On the men’s side, Bergen Handball represents the city in the top division. They play their matches at Haukelandshallen, which is just a few minutes from the city centre by the Light Rail (Bybanen), line 1 towards Flesland (stop: Brann stadion).
On the women’s side, Bergen has two elite teams: Tertnes and Fana.
Tertnes plays its home matches at Åsane Arena in northern Bergen. From the city centre, you can easily take bus no. 3 to Støbotn or bus no. 4 to Flaktveit. Get off at Åsane Terminal, and it is a 5-minute walk to the arena. The bus journey takes about 20 minutes.
Fana plays at Fana Arena, located in southern Bergen. From the city centre, take the Light Rail (Bybanen) line 1 towards Flesland and get off at Skjoldskiftet (the journey takes about 25 minutes). From the stop, it is just over a 10-minute walk to the arena.
Basketball
In Bergen, there are three men’s teams playing in the BLNO: Fyllingen Lions, Gimle, and Frøya.
Fyllingen Lions play their home games at Fyllingsdalshallen. From the city centre, take the Light Rail (Bybanen) line 2 towards Oasen and get off at the final stop of the same name (about 25 minutes). The arena is located 150 metres from the stop.
In league play, Gimle plays at Gimlehallen. This arena is easily reached by taking the Light Rail (Bybanen) line 1 towards Flesland and getting off at the stop called Sletten (about 15 minutes). The arena is approximately 250 metres from the Light Rail stop.
Both of these teams occasionally also play European cup matches. These matches are held at Haukelandshallen, which is just a few minutes from the city centre by the Light Rail (Bybanen), line 1 towards Flesland (stop: Brann stadion).
The third men’s BLNO team in Bergen is Frøya. They play their home matches at Frøya Arena at Melkeplassen. Take bus no. 19 to Løvstakkskiftet and get off at the final stop. From there, it is just over 100 metres to the arena.
On the women’s side, there are two Bergen teams playing in the BLNO: Ulriken Eagles and Frøya.
Ulriken Eagles play their home matches at Haukelandshallen (see information above), while Frøya plays their home matches at Frøya Arena (see information above).
Volleyball
In the so-called Mizuno League, Bergen is represented by TIF Viking in both the men’s and women’s leagues. Both teams play their home matches at Åsane Arena in northern Bergen. From the city centre, you can easily take bus no. 3 to Støbotn or bus no. 4 to Flaktveit. Get off at Åsane Terminal, and it is a 5-minute walk to the arena. The bus journey takes about 20 minutes.
Other sports
Bergen has more to offer than just team sports. If you feel like lacing up your running shoes while in Bergen, there is a wide range of opportunities, such as the Bergen City Marathon and Bergen City Mile. Both races take place in the city centre.
If you would like to try some of Bergen’s famous uphill races, we highly recommend Stoltzekleiven Opp (this race usually sells out, so you need to register early to take part) or Fløibanen Opp.
If you prefer watching others run rather than running yourself, we recommend the Trond Mohn Games. This athletics meet is held annually in late May or early June and features both national and international top athletes competing for victory in their respective events.
This year, the JKA European Karate Championships will also be held in Bergen on 8–9 May. Europe’s best karate athletes will gather at Haukelandshallen for this event.
FIFA World Cup
As most people know, the FIFA World Cup will be hosted by Canada, the USA, and Mexico this summer. Whether you support Norway, your home country, or have a soft spot for the Brazilian football artists, there will be plenty of opportunities to watch the matches while you are on holiday in Bergen. You can choose between several large fan tents or smaller pubs and venues.
