Mostraumen is one of Norway's most scenic fjord destinations, located just a short journey from Bergen along the Osterfjord.
Whether you're looking for a classic fjord cruise, a full-day excursion with a mountain hike, or an exciting RIB tour with lunch, the following tours offer something for every traveller. All trips depart from and return to Bergen.
Classic Fjord Cruise to Mostraumen
The classic Mostraumen fjord cruise is a 3.5 to 4-hour return journey from Bergen, taking you through the beautiful Osterfjord to the narrow and dramatic Mostraumen strait. It is the most popular way to experience the fjord, and several operators run this style of tour.

Here are three classic tours that are similar in style and duration (not ranked in order):
1. Rødne Fjord Cruise is the longest-running operator on this route and remains the most well-known choice. Their tour, Fjordcruise Bergen – Mostraumen, runs almost every day of the year, with several departures daily during spring and summer. The departure point is Zachariasbryggen, just opposite the tourist information office in central Bergen.
2. Fjordcharter Norway AS: From the same departure point, you can also book the Bergen - Modalen Fjordcruise, which follows a similar route and runs all year, with two daily departures during summer.
3. Fjord Cruise AS: The third option, 3,5 hour fjord cruise to Mostraumen, departs from various points within the inner harbour area depending on the time of year.
All three tours cover the same route and return you to Bergen within 3.5 to 4 hours.
Which is the best Mostraumen cruise?
It is hard to say which is best, as all three tours deliver pretty much the same scenic fjord experience. The most practical approach is to pick the one that fits your schedule and preferred departure time.
Fjord Cruise & Hiking Excursions
For those looking to combine the fjord cruise with a hike, Rødne offers two guided full-day excursions that are available from mid May to mid September. Both tours begin with the classic cruise past Mostraumen, before dropping off hikers at a trailhead - making these an excellent option for destinations that are otherwise difficult to reach by public transport.

On the first tour you disembark in Hosanger for the Kossdalssvingane hike, while the second tour takes you to Modalen for the hike up to Slottet. Both are rewarding trails with beautiful surroundings.
To join either of these tours you must book a dedicated hiking ticket, as the boat does not allow other passengers to disembark at the hiking stops. You will need to take the morning departure from Bergen, and after completing the hike you return to Bergen on the afternoon boat.
RIB Tours to Mostraumen
For a more exciting way to experience the fjord, two RIB tours are available from Bergen.
If time is limited, the Mostraumen Fjord Safari – by Premium RIB Boat is an excellent choice. You still get to experience the dramatic Mostraumen strait, but in a faster and more intimate setting than the classic cruise, all within 2.5 hours.
The Osterfjord & Mostraumen RIB Safari with Seaside Lunch is a half-day experience that takes you off the beaten path. You start with a bus from Bergen to Hosanger, where you board a RIB and head out onto the fjord towards Mostraumen. The tour includes lunch at Fjærå Sjøhus, a charming small pub and eatery situated right by the water's edge. After lunch you return to Bergen by bus - a full and varied day that combines fjord scenery, adventure, and local atmosphere.
Private Boat Hire to Mostraumen
For a more personal and exclusive experience, several operators offer private boat hire to Mostraumen. These tours are aimed at couples or small groups looking for a high-end alternative to scheduled departures, with the fjord largely to themselves. Departure times and itineraries are flexible, making it easy to tailor the trip to your needs.
What will you see at Mostraumen?
The highlight of the cruise is Mostraumen itself - a narrow strait where the fjord squeezes between steep mountainsides and the current runs strong. It is a dramatic and memorable sight. If you do not have time for a full day out, the classic Mostraumen cruise is a convenient and rewarding option that fits comfortably into half a day.
Getting to the departure point
All departure points are located within Bergen's inner harbour area, making them easy to reach on foot from the city centre. However, make sure you know exactly which pier your tour departs from before you head down. The boats leave strictly on time - not even a minute late - so allow yourself plenty of time to find the right departure point and be ready to board before departure. If you are departing from Zachariasbryggen this is located right by the Tourist Information.
Best time to visit Mostraumen
Mostraumen is worth visiting at any time of year. Spring and summer offer the most departures and the longest daylight hours, with the fjord landscape at its greenest. Autumn brings dramatic light and beautiful colors. Winter is also a great time to visit - the fjord takes on a completely different character, and on the coldest days the inner fjord may freeze over. On rare occasions this can prevent the boat from reaching all the way to Mostraumen, but this typically only happens a handful of times each year.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

Is there food and drink on board?

Do Bergen Card holders get a discount?
Yes, some tours offer a discount for Bergen Card holders. This will be stated on the individual tour listing.
Will the tours sell out?
Some departures do sell out, particularly during the summer season and holiday periods such as Christmas and Easter. We recommend booking in advance to secure your preferred departure.
Does it matter where I buy my ticket?
Yes, it does. If you book through visitBergen.com, at the Tourist Information in Bergen, or directly with the operator, you are supporting the local economy.
