Enjoy charming village life on the island Fedje
You are here: Home Region Explore the region Fedje - The village in the ocean
At Fedje, the distances are short and the experiences close by. Enjoy village life on the charming island of Fedje.
Far west in the ocean outside Bergen is the municipality Fedje. The small island of 7.4 square kilometres is so far west that you are actually closer to Shetland than to Oslo.
Fedje is about two hours by car north-west of Bergen, including a half-hour ferry ride. The ferry is free, for both passengers and cars. If you travel by private boat, you are welcome to dock in the harbour.

The first thing you’ll see when you arrive in Fedje by ferry is the charming village store called Landhandleriet. Landhandleriet, which also doubles as the Tourist Information, is a natural meeting point for both permanent residents and visitors.

Enjoy a cup of coffee and the local specialty Fedjebolle (The Fedje bun). If you drink your coffee on the bench outside, there's always a chance of an interesting chat with the friendly locals.

Fedje is a small island with around 500 inhabitants and a charming place to visit. You have several options when it comes to accommodation. The most unique place to stay is Hellisøy lighthouse from 1855, where you can stay overnight in the lighthouse keeper's residence. The lighthouse was inhabited until 1982.

Another interesting place is the former sardine factory Fab8. Fab8 offers self-service apartments with a view to of harbour or the sea.
It is also possible to rent a room at the local café or at Fedje Ferietun. Fedje Ferietun is located close to the harbour and can accommodate up to 10 people. They also offer parking for caravans and motorhomes with access to bathrooms, water and electricity.
If you are interested in local, sustainable food, an overnight stay in the converted farmhouse of Jostein Husa is a great option. Jostein prepares meals for his guests from local ingredients that he harvests or picks himself. Read more about accommodation options at Fedje here.
Fedje is located at approximately the same latitude as Scotland. A group of female entrepreneurs and investors have set themselves the goal of developing a Norwegian whiskey that will be at least as good as the well-known Scotch whiskey.

The valuable drops are produced at the Feddie Ocean Distillery, located in the harbour at Fedje. You can book a tour of the distillery and the tour includes a tasting of the whiskey. However, it is not only whiskey that is produced at Fedje. Feddie Ocean Distillery also makes great gin and aquavit.
You will definitely not leave Fedje feeling hungry. There are several nice places to eat on the island. At Pernille Mat & Bar they serve meat, fish and vegetarian food and of course the local whiskey. At Landsbykafeen, which has a great outdoor seating area, you will find simple but nice dishes in a friendly atmosphere. The grocery store by the harbour is world famous on Fedje for its buns and ice cream cones.

The nature along the west coast of Norway is beautiful, and Fedje is no exception.
Along the paths in the coastal heaths, the flora is lush and the view of the waves that wash in from the Atlantic Ocean is fantastic. The island of Fedje is quite small and flat, which makes it easy to explore for everyone. The highest point on the island towers no more than 41.9 meters above sea level.
We recommend a trip on the North Sea trail in the beautiful coastal heaths at Fedje or a day trip to the cabin Aurihopen. If you want to go for a bike ride, which is perfect on Fedje, Landhandleriet by the harbour has bikes for hire. If you want to get the ultimate sea experience, book a RIB tour or a fishing trip. However, the most important thing when you visit Fedje is to lower your shoulders, don’t look at the time and just enjoy the village life.
