Enjoy charming village life on the island Fedje
You are here: Home Region Explore the region Fedje - The village in the ocean
At Fedje, the distances are short and the experiences close by. Enjoy village life on the charming island of Fedje.
Far west in the ocean outside Bergen is the municipality Fedje. The small island of 7.4 square kilometres is so far west that you are actually closer to Shetland than to Oslo.
Fedje is located approximately two hours by car northwest of Bergen, including a ferry crossing of around half an hour that takes you over to The Village in the Sea. The ferry is free, even if you bring your own car or have a rental car.

Fedje is a charming place with narrow roads, and many visitors in summer. If you are going on a day trip or can manage without a car, it is recommended to leave the car at Sævrøy fergekai. Distances to most things are short, and if you are going on a longer trip you can for example rent a bicycle or bring your own.
If you are travelling by public transport, there are several buses to Sævrøy throughout the day. You can check the route and departure times from your nearest bus stop at Skyss.no. If you choose Fedje Fergekai as your destination you will see which buses correspond with the ferry. If you are arriving by your own boat, you can dock at the guest harbour.
The first thing that greets you when you arrive at Fedje is Jentene på Kaien, located at the ferry quay.
Jentene på Kaien, which also serves as the tourist information office, is a natural gathering point for both residents and visitors to Fedje.
Here you will find local products, products from local artists and craftspeople, a café, and good stories. If you sit down with your coffee cup on one of the benches outside the shop, you will easily strike up a conversation with the locals.

Although Fedje is a small island with around 500 inhabitants, it offers plenty for visitors. The island has several accommodation options. For example, you can stay at the former sardine factory, Fab8, which features eight holiday apartments with views of the harbor or the open sea. All apartments are of a high standard, with a well-equipped kitchen, dining table, spacious living room, and nice bathrooms. The largest apartment is perfect for small meetings, seminars, or private gatherings. It has a cozy lounge area and a beautiful terrace.

Fedje is located at approximately the same latitude as Scotland. A group of female entrepreneurs and investors have set themselves the goal of developing a Norwegian whiskey that will be at least as good as the well-known Scotch whiskey.

The valuable drops are produced at the Feddie Ocean Distillery, located in the harbour at Fedje. You can book a tour of the distillery and the tour includes a tasting of the whiskey. However, it is not only whiskey that is produced at Fedje. Feddie Ocean Distillery also makes great gin and aquavit.
There is a lot of good food on Fedje, and at the harbour you will find a few dining options. At Losen you get good food and a great atmosphere in unpretentious surroundings. The house at the harbour by the church was originally a café and guesthouse for Fedje's pilots from when it was built in 1933, and the name honours the pilots of the past and present. At the lovely outdoor seating you can among other things taste the fine drops from Feddie Ocean Distillery.

The nature along the west coast of Norway is beautiful, and Fedje is no exception.
Along the paths in the coastal heaths, the flora is lush and the view of the waves that wash in from the Atlantic Ocean is fantastic. The island of Fedje is quite small and flat, which makes it easy to explore for everyone. The highest point on the island towers no more than 41.9 meters above sea level.
We recommend a trip on the North Sea trail in the beautiful coastal heaths at Fedje or a day trip to the cabin Aurihopen. If you want to go for a bike ride, which is perfect on Fedje, Jentene på Kaien by the harbour has bikes for hire. If you want to get the ultimate sea experience, book a RIB tour or a fishing trip. However, the most important thing when you visit Fedje is to lower your shoulders, don’t look at the time and just enjoy the village life.
