You are here: Home Region Explore the region Austevoll - Enjoy the good things in life
Austevoll can be described in one word: Quality. With world-class food, and accommodation, this is where you come to enjoy the good things in life.
The Austevoll archipelago consists of 667 islands, islets and reefs. The possibility for great experiences is many, not at least when it comes to food.
To get to Austevoll, you can travel by boat from the Strandkai Terminal in Bergen city center to Bekkjarvik, or to the municipal center Storebø. The route is operated by Skyss. Austevoll is also a perfect distance from Bergen for a day trip by car. The drive takes about 1,5 hours and includes a ferry from Krokeide to Hufthammar. The ferry crossing takes 35 minutes.
Austevoll is part of Sunnhordland, which are labelled as Sustainable destination. Sustainable destination is a quality mark for destinations that has committed to work systematically towards more sustainable tourism, preserving local communities, natural areas, and cultural heritage, and reducing the environmental footprint from tourism.
A visit to Bekkjarvik Gjestgiveri Hotel & Suites is a must when visiting Austevoll. The hotel was first built as an inn at the end of the 17th century and has been welcoming guests from near and far ever since. The hotel offers accommodation in beautiful surroundings, but the icing on the cake so to speak is the restaurant. Former Bocuse d'Or winner Ørjan Johannessen and his brother Arnt creates culinary experiences of world-class quality. One of the signature dishes is wild sheep, a local delicacy in Western Norway.

In the autumn of 2023, Ørjan Johannessen unveiled his latest culinary venture, Mirabelle by Ørjan Johannessen. Nestled just a brief stroll away from Bekkjarvik, this exquisite restaurant finds its home in the newly established boutique hotel, Beckerwyc House. Inspired by "Island Gastronomy," Mirabelle delivers a distinctive dining experience, showcasing locally sourced ingredients infused with flavors that harmonize both new and old traditions.

To visit the village Bekkjarvik you can join a tour which includes a cruise from Bergen city center and a 4-course dinner at Bekkjarvik Gjestgiveri Hotel & Suites.
If you have a full day to spare, then join a slightly longer culinary safari which includes lunch at Bekkjarvik, a visit to the island Tysnes to taste some delightful chocolate and a stop at Bareksten for some world-renowned gin.
Bekkjarvik Gjestgiveri Hotel & Suites is an important part of both tours, which start and end in the city centre of Bergen. If you would like a private tour, The Bergen Event Company can assist you.
To get to some of the smaller islands in Austevoll you can travel on one of the local boat routes. One of these islands is called Møkster, and you can arrive to Møkster by boat from Bergen.

There is no road connection or car ferry to the island, but there are still a few permanent residents. The first thing you’ll see when you disembark from the boat is the local restaurant Havnechefen. A great place to enjoy nice food and drinks by the seaside.

At Møkster you might also catch a glimpse of the sea eagles. The island has nice beaches, beautiful hikes and a shop. You can also spend the night here, just remember to book in advance. (email: mokster.info@gmail.com)
In Bekkjarvik there are several things to see and do. The harbor in Bekkjarvik has been named Norway's best three times. Bekkjarvik also offers parking for mobile homes and caravans. If you are looking for something to eat other than gourmet food, try Smakeriet Burgerbar right in the centre.
Bekkjarvik has a great beach and a nice park. The park has a variety of flowers, trees, ponds, lawns and benches to relax and enjoy the nature. The walking path through the park is suitable for everyone, including disabled.

Just outside Bakkasund, north-west in Austevoll, is Olaskjeret, a place for experiences and recreation. Forget everyday life and enjoy the feeling of being isolated in your own island paradise.

On this small island outside Bakkasund, you can sleep and eat well. The place has its own beach and beautiful outdoor areas. Rent a kayak or a SUP, join a RIB safari or try your luck fishing. If you like to go hiking, there are several possibilities in Austevoll. The Sherpa steps up Kongskleiva, or "Kongsen" as the locals say, is a popular walk suitable for all ages. The starting point is behind the hotel, and you can follow the marked trail past the school and kindergarten. The stone steps meander up the terrain between heather and juniper, and at the top you get a lovely view.
Another option is the walk to Globen on the island of Stolmen.

During the Second World War, the Germans built a facility for radar and listening at Stolmen. The remains of the facility give you an impression of the activities during the war. The facility is located along the North Sea Route. The Globe is an illuminated memorial marking 60 degrees north.
This area south of Bergen has a lot to offer. You will find more hiking tips from Austevoll in this article.
