One of the most incredible train journeys in the world
You are here: Home Things To Do Norway fjords Flåm Flåm Railway
Roaring waterfalls, steep mountainsides and narrow fjords. The Flåm Railway is known as one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world.
The Flåm Railway (or Flåmsbana in Norwegian) takes you from the high mountain plateau at Myrdal Station, down the steep valley to the fjord by the village Flåm. The Flåm Railway is one of Norway’s most popular tourist attractions, and was ranked as no 1 in Lonely Planet Traveler’s list of "The World’s most incredible train journeys of 2014".

The journey provides a magnificent scenery with rivers that cut through deep ravines, waterfalls falling from glaciers hammering towards the steep mountainsides, and the small farms clinging to the mountain sides.
The Flåm Railway is really a breath taking ride, taking you 20 kilometers down the twists and tunnels that spiral back and forth the steep mountain side. It is an impressive work of engineering!

The journey is one of the world’s steepest rides built on normal tracks, and close to 80% of its tracks run through a rise of 55% or more! The train makes a stop at Kjosfossen, where passengers can get a cultural experience during the summer season. The Flåm Railway has for several years been the most visited tourist attraction in Norway.

Further down the valley the beautiful Aurlandsfjord appear – an arm of the majestic Sognefjord – the World’s largest fjord. The panoramic view displays some of the wildest and most magnificent nature in the Fjord Norway region.
If you want to get more insight to the construction of the spectacular railway journey, the Flåm Railway Museum is open for visitors.
The train journey is a part of many fjord tours, like the legendary Norway in a Nutshell®, taking you through Norway’s most breathtaking UNESCO-protected fjord and mountain scenery. You can combine your trip with activities providing unique closeness to nature.
A selection of the trips with Norway Active, like Standard Fjord Tour from Bergen, includes the Flåm Railway halfway down to the stop called Berekvam. (You have then seen the most spectacular section of the train journey).

From Berekvam you continue the last 11 kilometers downhill to Flåm by bike. The narrow road runs besides the river most of the way with fantastic views of the valley. Feel the fresh air and see the magnificent water falls falling from the high glaciers hanging over the mountains!
The Flåm Railway is available all year, and can be completed in just a one-day trip from Bergen.
