The city of Bergen is surrounded by mountains and fjords, and is known for fresh seafood and quality goods from the region. You will find both traditional and modern restaurants in Bergen, and here are some that definitely stands out.
BARE Restaurant - Bergen's first restaurant to receive a Michelin star
In a minimalist and stylish venue, guests from all over the world are served delicious dishes based on local ingredients.
Lysverket – A Michelin-star restaurant with exclusive flavours of fresh seafood
In the heart of the city, one of the largest art museums in the Nordic countries, KODE, also hosts a modern restaurant. Lysverket is a well-known Bergen restaurant, offering a fine dining experience with a focus on seafood, but also including meat and vegetable dishes. Choose from their a la carte lunch menu, simple dishes from their bar menu or a 4 or 7-course meals with local seafood like crayfish, lobster, scallops and oysters. In the bar you find a great selection of Norwegian hand crafted beers and cocktails, based on their own juices, syrups and bitters.
Bryggen Tracteursted – a taste of Hanseatic and Bergen culture
Around the year 1360, Bryggen in Bergen was established as an “office” for the Hanseatic merchants who lived in the city and traded with grains and dried cod from the north of Norway. At the back of the yards at Bryggen were Schøtstuene, used as a gathering place where Hanseatic were served hot meals. Today, Svensgårdens Schøtstue and Ildhuset, the firehouse, are a part of the restaurant Bryggen Tracteursted. The restaurant serves dishes inspired by the food culture of Bergen and the western part of Norway, based on local produce. Dried cod and Bergen specialities like prince fish and røkerumpe, smoked cod tail, are off course on the menu.
Sky:skraperen – a special food experience “on top of Bergen”
Bergen is surrounded by mountains, and on the highest city mountain Ulriken, 643 meters above sea level, lies the restaurant Sky:skraperen, the skyscraper. From this unique Bergen restaurant you can enjoy a spectacular view of the city and the other city mountains. During the daytime, the restaurant offers an unformal dining experience, for hikers, visitors and families, who can enjoy their lunch at the panorama terrace. In the evening, “Ulriken by Night” offers a unique food experience. The kitchen is based on produce and traditions from the western part of Norway, with a modern twist.
Cornelius Seafood Restaurant – a meteorological menu on the seafront
Enjoy a boattrip in the archipelago from Bryggen to Cornelius Seafood Restaurant. The restaurant is located on a small island with an incredible view of the fjord and the surrounding mountains, and the seafood used is found right outside the door. In the seawater aquarium you can see live lobster, scallops, oysters and sea crabs. Cornelius is open all year round, and the table setting and menu varies with the weather. On a sunny day, the doors are opened and the tables on the dock are served with light meals. In rougher weather, the indoors are filled with a cosy atmosphere and strong flavours, a burning fireplace and candlelight.
These are just a couple of the restaurants you can enjoy while here, and there are a lot of other restaurants in Bergen that are also worth a visit.
