Not content with just seeing the fjords? Want to get even closer to the water than on a fjord cruise? Kayaking might be exactly what you’re looking for.
You’re right in the middle of it all. The dark blue fjord beneath you – nothing but clear skies ahead. Green-clad mountains towering above you on both sides. The only sound you hear is the smooth trickling of water. Kayaking in a fjord can be a truly serene experience. Enticed? Here’s what you need to know.

Yes.
No, really – it probably is. For most of the guided tours, at least, you don’t need much (or any) experience. Nor do you need to be in the shape of your life. You only need to be prepared for the unpredictable fjord weather. The guided tours will give you proper instructions, and there are kayak tours perfect for beginners. So if you want to get the experience of a lifetime, jump right in!
Now you’re asking the real questions. Truth is, most of them are. But let’s run through some of the most popular destinations for kayakers and the kayak-curious alike:
There’s not much unsaid about the Geiranger fjord. Not only is the landscape spectacular, there are plenty of guided tours available. Combine kayaking with a hiking trip to abandoned farms like Skageflå and Knivsflå, and make this a complete blue and green fjord experience
There’s a reason why Bergen is called the heart of the fjords. With Bergen as your hub and plenty of things to do, you have access to amazing kayak paddling spots like Sognefjorden, Hardangerfjorden and Flåm. Nærøyfjorden, technically an arm of the Sognefjord, is a gem for kayaking – and one of the most popular destinations. Read more about Nærøyfjorden - Norway's narrowest fjord.

So just paddling along is a bit boring to you? Don’t worry. If you want a more intense experience, you could always try ocean kayaking out in the open sea. Or do you think kayaking is an activity exclusive to the summer season? Think again! Winter kayaking can not only provide you with a unique arctic view, but really give you the chills – in all the good ways. Still not enough for you? Try a rafting tour! Increased pulse guaranteed!
