Driving is a great way to experience the amazing nature of Norway. Norway is a vast country, so it’s easy to underestimate the size and the time it takes to get around by car. Driving from Oslo to Bergen takes around 7-8 hours and driving from Trondheim takes around 11 hours.
Roads in Norway have relatively high standards on the main routes but can be quite narrow in some places. There is also a big difference between driving in summer and winter in Norway. In winter snow can cover roads in the mountains and some of the most exposed mountain passages are closed. You also need special winter tires when driving in the winter time.
You should also note that there is a lot of steep mountains in Norway and all the climbing and descending can be hard on the brakes. The rules regarding, among other things; speed limits, drinking and driving, using a seatbelt, keeping the headlights always on and having your driver’s license on you are very strict, so be sure to follow them.
All over Norway there are places to stop when you are driving. There are a lot of places to stop where you will find a table and some benches and there are also a lot of cafes and small towns all over Norway you can get some rest and something to eat. The amazing nature and local culture makes Norway a great place to discover by car.
