How to get from Bergen to Flåm: The complete guide

If you’re travelling between Bergen and Flåm, you have several great transport options. You can go by fjord cruise (5.5 hours), train (3 hours 45 minutes), express bus (3 hours) or car (2.5 hours). 

Flåm is a charming village located at the end of Sognefjord, Norway’s longest and deepest fjord, and one of the most popular fjord destinations

Your preferred route from Bergen to Flåm - or the other way around - will depend on the time of year, your travel plans and your budget.  

 Let’s look at the different travel options, to help you make the best choice. 

1. Fjordcruise from Bergen to Flåm 

One of the most scenic ways to travel from Bergen to Flåm is by fjord cruise, operating from April to October. This is a popular choice among visitors who want to experience the full length of the Sognefjord.

The cruise departs early in the morning at 08:00 and takes around 5.5 hours. The journey begins by heading north along the coast before entering the impressive Sognefjord and continuing all the way to Flåm, the final stop. The boat makes several stops along the way, but please note that passengers traveling to Flåm cannot disembark at the intermediate stops.

The departure point is located right next to the Bergen Tourist Information in the city centre. 

You can also take this cruise as part of the Sognefjord in a Nutshell™ round trip, which allows you to stay overnight in Flåm or return to Bergen by train the same day, or even continue from Flåm to Oslo. 

Season: April – end of October, one departure daily 

Departure: Strandkai terminal, next to the Tourist Information 

This tour is very popular and often fully booked in July and August, so booking in advance is highly recommended.

2. Train from Bergen to Flåm including the Flåm Railway 

Another favourite option is travelling by train. The journey combines the train called Bergensbanen from Bergen to Myrdal and the world renowned Flåm Railway from Myrdal to Flåm. 

Bergen → Myrdal: approx. 2.5 hours 
Myrdal → Flåm: approx. 1 hour

Myrdal is a small mountain station with no road access, known only as a change over station to the Flåm Railway. 

This train journey is comfortable and scenic from start to finish. The Flåm Railway is considered one of the most spectacular train rides in the world. 

You can also take the train to Flåm as part of a round trip from Bergen, with the tour called Norway in a Nutshell® or one of the active tours with Norway Active.

3. The Sognefjord Express bus from Bergen to Flåm

If you’re looking for a fast way to travel between Bergen and Flåm, the Sognefjord Express bus is an excellent option. The bus takes only 3 hours from Bergen Bus Station or Bergen Airport Flesland to Flåm Station, with several stops along the way, including Voss

Season: All year, two departures daily.

4. Driving from Bergen to Flåm 

If you’re travelling by car from Bergen to Flåm, the drive takes around 2.5 hours. The route passes through Voss, a lovely town and a great place to stop along the way. There are several car rental companies in Bergen.

Please note that Flåm is a busy place during the summer and parking might be difficult at peak season. There are designated paid parking places available and you can read more about parking and parking fees in Flåm here.

Season: Spring, summer, autumn
