Day trip from Bergen to Voss in winter

Voss is easily accessible by train from Bergen

Easy day trip from Bergen: Winter activities in Voss

Just a short train ride from Bergen, Voss is a charming village that makes for an easy and enjoyable day trip. With good connections by train, getting there is simple and hassle-free.

Getting from Bergen to Voss:

One of the best things about visiting Voss is how convenient it is. The Vy train from Bergen train station takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes and continues toward Oslo unless you take a local train that ends in Myrdal. If you’d like some variety on your return journey, you can take the Vy Express evening bus back to Bergen instead, which takes around 1 hour and 45 minutes.

You can check the train schedule and book your train tickets at Vy.no

Trains run frequently, allowing you to plan your day at your own pace. Just keep in mind that daylight hours are much shorter in winter compared to summer.

Exploring Voss: Gondola, skiing, and hiking

When you arrive in Voss, you’ll find yourself right in the village center. From the train station, it’s easy to start your adventure - just step over to the Voss Gondola, which takes you up into the mountains in less than nine minutes. At the top, you can enjoy skiing, hiking (if conditions allow), or simply take in the views over a meal at the mountaintop restaurant.

Voss Resort – skiing or hiking

Voss Resort is Western Norway’s largest ski resort, offering 40 kilometers of groomed alpine slopes and 24 varied descents. Voss gondola, which departs from the train station, is included in all ski passes and provides quick access to the slopes. You can choose between alpine and cross-country skiing, with the ski season in Voss usually running from December to April, depending on the amount of snowfall.

If you’re visiting outside the skiing season, the gondola is a great way to reach the mountains for hiking. An easy option is the Hanguren Panorama, a scenic 800-meter loop right by the gondola’s top station. This trail is accessible for strollers and wheelchairs and has several great photo spots along the way.

Myrkdalen Ski Resort

If you’re looking for even more skiing options, Myrkdalen Ski Resort is just a 40-minute shuttle bus ride from Voss. The bus connects with selected trains to and from Bergen and is free of charge. You can reserve a seat here: Myrkdalen Ski Bus.

Myrkdalen is a family-friendly resort with slopes for all levels, terrain parks, ski cross slopes, and excellent off-piste areas. Ski equipment is available for rent at both Voss Resort and Myrkdalen Resort.

VossVind – indoor skydiving

A full day of skiing might be enough activity for one day. But if skiing isn’t your thing - or if you want to mix things up - head down to VossVind for a unique experience.

VossVind is Norway’s first vertical, recirculating wind tunnel, allowing you to experience the sensation of skydiving in a completely safe and controlled environment. It’s located about an 8-minute drive (or taxi) from the village center or a 30-minute walk.

Exploring Voss village

If you’d rather take it easy, Voss itself is worth exploring. The village center, known as Vangen, has two main streets lined with shops, cafés, and restaurants. The area is set by Vangsvatnet, a picturesque lake that adds to the village’s charm.

Staying overnight

If you decide to extend your stay, Elva (meaning the River), offers a unique accommodation concept, with mini-houses stacked on top of each other, each named after a local river. Overlooking Lunda Lake, this makes for a memorable overnight stay in Voss.

A great winter getaway

Whether you’re taking in the views from the gondola, skiing at Voss Resort or Myrkdalen, trying out the wind tunnel, or simply enjoying the village atmosphere, Voss is an easy and rewarding day trip from Bergen.
