The small village Flåm is one of the most popular destinations in Norway and Scandinavia due to its stunning scenery and location.
Most have probably seen spectacular images of the landscape in Western Norway - steep, forested mountainsides that plunge into the blue fjord, waterfalls, narrow fjords and valleys. The famous railway line Flåmsbana struggling up the mountain to Myrdal station 867 meters above sea level, the view from viewing platform Stegastein in Aurland.
This and much more you will experience on your journey to Flåm.
The village Flåm is surrounded by high mountains. Although most locals live in the bottom of the valley, you can see houses and farms spectacularly clinging to the mountainside on the most unlikely places.
The fjord is of course an important part of the history of Flåm. It was the fjord that connected the villages to each other and provided the locals with livelihoods in form of fishing. Later the fjord has become a destination in itself and every year thousands of visitors come to experience the unique and unspoiled nature in Flåm, Aurlandsfjorden and Nærøyfjorden.
Flåm is also a natural stop when visiting the many unique places in the immediate vicinity. The Aurlandsfjord who runs into Flåm is also connected with Nærøyfjorden who features on Unesco’s list of World Heritage.
There are many ways to experience both Aurlandsfjorden and Nærøyfjoden. There are several large and small boats that offer fjord tours and every day there is an express boat from Flåm to Bergen. Flåm is also a popular harbor for cruise ships. The most popular way to travel between Bergen and Flåm is by train to Myrdal and the Flåm Railway from Myrdal down to Flåm. Flåm Railway is one of the biggest attractions in Norway and is one of the steepest train lines in the world on normal tracks.
