Water Stories – Sea Kayaking, Local Food & Island Stories
At Water Stories, the best way to experience Norway is slowly, with curiosity and all senses open. This adventure combines sea kayaking, wildlife, local food and authentic island life into an experience that feels far away from the city - yet only 35 minutes from Bergen. You will paddle through the coastal landscapes of Øygarden, discover life above and below the water surface, and enjoy a wholesome meal at one of the area's most unique venues.
You will return to Bergen calmer, richer, fuller, saltier – and with plenty of stories to tell.
The Journey
The tour starts at Bergen Tourist Information at 09:30. From there, the city is left behind, with the journey heading towards the North Sea coast.
After an approximately 35-minute drive, the group arrives at Porsvika 125 – a unique coastal meeting place with deep roots in local history. Once home to one of the first bakeries in the island region and a traditional herb garden, Porsvika remains a place where people gather, share stories and enjoy the slower rhythm of island life.
Before heading onto the water, you will receive a thorough safety briefing and introduction to paddling. Stable double sea kayaks are used, and all necessary equipment is provided.
The Kayaking Experience
The kayak is the key to exploring Øygarden from sea level.
For approximately 2–2.5 hours, the route winds through sheltered bays, narrow sounds and small islands shaped by the North Sea. Depending on weather and sea conditions, the tour may venture towards more exposed coastline where the power of the ocean can truly be felt. Sometimes a short hike to a nearby viewpoint is included, allowing you to experience the landscape both from the water and from above.
No two days are exactly the same.
On some days, curious seabirds follow along between the islands. On others, sea eagles may be spotted soaring overhead, otters playing along the shoreline or seals resting nearby. Beneath the crystal-clear water, forests of seaweed sway with the currents, creating one of Norway's most fascinating coastal ecosystems.
You may discover colourful anemones, unusual jellyfish and marine life that many visitors never notice. If you are curious, you can learn more about edible seaweeds, how they have traditionally been used and even get a few chef's tips on how to prepare them.
There is always time to paddle, observe, ask questions or simply be quiet and enjoy the surroundings.
Meet Your Guide
The experience is guided by a former musician, chef and now a sea kayak guide. Having experienced Norway from many different perspectives, stories about the coast, local food traditions, wildlife and everyday life in Western Norway are shared throughout the day. Whether you want to learn as much as possible or simply enjoy the silence, the day is adapted to the group and to each individual participant.
Porsvika 125 and Local Food
After the kayaking adventure, the group returns to Porsvika 125 for a well-deserved meal.
This historic site was once home to one of the area's first bakeries and a herb garden serving the island communities. Today, it continues its tradition of hospitality by welcoming visitors to experience local flavours and stories.
Lunch is freshly prepared using local ingredients whenever possible. Guests can choose between fish, meat or vegetarian options.
A typical meal consists of a generous slice of homemade sourdough bread topped with smoked sea trout, cured slow-cooked ham or a colourful selection of seasonal vegetables. The dishes are finished with homemade herbal oils, pickled onions, fennel and other locally inspired ingredients.
The meal is served with locally produced apple juice, coffee or tea. Additional drinks can be purchased separately.
This is not a quick snack between activities, but an opportunity to slow down, enjoy the surroundings and experience the flavours of the islands.

This tour is designed for curious travellers, nature lovers, food enthusiasts, solo travellers, couples, friends, families and anyone looking for a more personal and authentic experience. No previous kayaking experience is required.
The pace, route and level of instruction are adapted to the participants, making the experience suitable for complete beginners as well as more experienced paddlers. Single kayaks may be available for experienced kayakers upon request.

The North Sea is part of the adventure. The tour runs in most weather conditions, with the route and pace adapted accordingly. If weather or sea conditions do not allow the tour to operate safely, a full refund will be given.
