Stranges Stiftelse was established in 1609 as a poorhouse for women and tells a story of poverty and social deprivation. Guided tour and exhibition during the summer.

Stranges Stiftelse was established in 1609 as a poorhouse for women and tells a story of poverty and social deprivation.
The social institutions that had been run by the Catholic Church disappeared with the Reformation in 1537, and charitable institutions were established by private initiative. One of these institutions was Stranges Stiftelse, a poorhouse for women. The building was in use until 1972, when the home was closed down because of the "primitive" conditions of the building. The interior then remained more or less unchanged for 220 years.

The National Trust of Norway, which is a voluntary association, owns and manages the building today.

Stranges Stiftelse is located in Klostergaten in the centre of Bergen.

Shop: In the small museum shop you will find postcards, books and more.

Wheelchairs: Unfortunately, there is no universal access.
