Bergen Piano Trio invites you to a unique concert where the boundaries between folk music and classical music are explored and challenged. The concert features the world premiere of the work Tårefragmenter for the special ensemble of Hardanger fiddle, cello, and piano by the West Norwegian composer Therese Birkelund Ulvo. In addition, the program includes classical piano trio works by Frank Martin and Dmitri Shostakovich, both of whom also drew inspiration from the world of folk music.
Bergen Piano Trio was founded in autumn 2021 by Edel Bolstad (pianist from Bergen), Sunniva Monstad (violinist from Bergen), and Åshild Brunvoll (cellist from Voss). In recent years, the trio has immersed itself in music by composers such as Brahms, Grieg, Andrée, Shostakovich, Garrop, and Sæverud. Today, all three are freelance musicians based in Oslo, but their main work as a trio takes place in Bergen and the surrounding region. The young ensemble places special emphasis on vivid communication and storytelling.
The piece Tårefragmenter draws musical fragments from traditional fiddle tunes from Nordhordaland, including Gråtarelåten, Høgsumar, and Sylkje-Per. Through the combination of Hardanger fiddle, cello, and piano, the traditional melodies are broken down, mirrored, and reassembled—like small, wistful sound fragments filled with memories from the West Norwegian folk music tradition.
