Janus Wool – Natural Warmth Knitted in Norway
For 130 years, Janus Wool has mastered the art of knitting wool. The long experience, rooted in the historic factory at Espeland in Bergen since 1895, means one important thing for you: here you will find quality garments built on generations of knowledge, craftsmanship and innovation.
Wool for different seasons and activities
Merino wool works well in many different situations, from everyday life and quiet days at home to hiking, skiing and outdoor activities. Different wool weights make it possible to choose a garment according to the season, temperature and activity level.
For warmer conditions and summer hikes, lightweight merino wool offers comfort without unnecessary warmth. The lightest base layers are available in 160 g/m², making them suitable for mild temperatures, travelling and active days when you want a thin layer next to the skin.
For colder conditions, medium-weight merino wool at approximately 215 g/m² provides more insulation. This weight can work especially well during winter for people who do not get cold easily, or as part of a layered clothing system.
For particularly cold days, the AirWool collection includes warm base layers at approximately 260 g/m². The wool is brushed on the inside, creating a very soft and comfortable surface against the skin. The brushed structure also traps more air, providing additional insulation when temperatures drop.
The selection goes beyond base layers. You can also find a variety of mid-layers, including merino wool jackets, sweatshirts and vests. AirWool mid-layers are particularly soft and warm and can be worn both in everyday life and during outdoor activities. Base layers and mid-layers can be combined depending on the weather, making them suitable for everything from a walk through Bergen to a day on the mountain or ski slopes.
Merino wool for active days
For higher-intensity activities, the Norse Merino collection is designed to combine the natural properties of merino wool with increased durability. The Norse Merino range also includes mesh base layers. This structure helps provide breathability while maintaining the benefits of wool close to the body.
For active winter days, the Double wool from Janus combines an inner mesh structure with a warmer merino wool layer on the outside. This creates a balance between insulation and breathability, making it useful during intense activity in cold weather.
Why merino wool?
Janus garments are made from 100% merino wool, giving you the natural softness, warmth and temperature-regulating properties that wool is known for.
Merino wool is particularly practical in Bergen and on trips around Norway, where the weather can change quickly. Indeed, wool helps regulate body temperature, keeping you comfortable when conditions shift between cool and mild.
It is also naturally resistant to odours, which makes it useful when travelling light. T-shirts and base layers can often be worn several times before they need washing. Airing the garment overnight can often be enough to freshen it up before the next day.
This makes merino wool a practical choice whether you are hiking in the mountains, skiing, exploring the city, travelling through Norway or simply looking for comfortable clothing for everyday use.
A local wool tradition dating back to 1895
The Janus factory was established at Espeland, right outside Bergen, in 1895. The location was chosen with purpose: hydropower from nearby streams could be used to operate the factory.
Since then, Janus has grown into one of Norway's established wool brands, with a particularly strong connection to Bergen as many generations of "bergensere" have grown up wearing Janus wool. Janus also became part of Norwegian sporting history as an official supplier in connection with the 1994 Winter Olympic Games in Lillehammer.
While much of the textile industry has moved production abroad, Janus has maintained its connection to Norwegian manufacturing and continued to invest in production in Norway. The result is a combination of long-standing textile knowledge, modern knitting techniques and wool garments designed for real-life use.
When you choose Janus, you are not simply choosing a wool garment. You are choosing a product shaped by more than a century of Norwegian textile tradition, experience and craftsmanship.
Whether you need an extra layer for changing Bergen weather, clothing for your next hike or ski trip, something warm for a child or baby, or last-minute essentials before continuing your journey through Norway, the Janus store in Bergen sentrum can help you find the right wool for the occasion.
