1848 in the Rear-View Mirror: Contemporary Resonances of a European Revolution.

In this public lecture, Professor Sir Christopher Clark will walk us through the history of "the only truly European revolution" - a shared, continent-wide experience that led to the formation of an entirely new European politics. He will also discuss the lessons of 1848 for today, showing how the revolutions of that year can help us to understand a world in which previously stable political concepts and identities seem to be swiftly dissolving.

Sir Christopher Clark is Regius Professor of History at the University of Cambridge. He is one of the world's most recognised authorities on the history of modern Europe and the author of, among others, The Sleepwalkers: How Europe Went to War in 1914 (2012) and Revolutionary Spring: Fighting for a New World 1848–1849 (2023). He is also known for his television documentaries series, including The Story of Europe (2017) and Planet of Treasures (2020). Professor Clark's accolades include the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Pour le Mérite for Sciences and Arts. In 2015, he was knighted for his service to Anglo-German relations.
