About
If you want to discover Bergen and not only get to know the historical heritage and the most important sights, but also learn more about the country and its people, then this tour is just right for you.
Hello, my name is Martin and I've been living in Norway since 2014. As an authorized guide, I would like to introduce you to my adopted country with interesting stories, anecdotes and tales of very personal experiences.
More than 290,000 people live in Bergen today. They feel connected to nature, carry their traditions with pride in their hearts and are aware of the special nature of their city and their homeland.
I would like to tell you about these traditions and the Norwegian way of life and we will also go "up high". We will visit the Hanseatic district of Bryggen, where you will hear about the trade of German merchants, get to know the Bergen composer Edvard Grieg and learn a lot about the country's important oil and fishing industry.
This tour will also leave you with exciting culinary impressions. Let yourself be surprised.
In a small group with a maximum of 10 participants, you will get to know Bergen's and Norway's history, way of life and cuisine on this tour. You will always have the opportunity to ask me questions.
Overview of the tour
Part 1
A ride on the Floibanen funicular up Mount Floyen is a must when visiting Bergen. A magnificent view is the "reward" when you reach the top. But even if the mountain is covered in fog and there is no view of the city, a ride up is still worthwhile.
For the "Bergenser", the mountain is more than just a vantage point. Here you can experience the locals in their natural "habitat". In winter, on skis or on a sledge. In summer, jogging, hiking or picnicking.
We take the Floibanen up the mountain together. On a short hike (on well-maintained, wide hiking trails) we make our way to a small mountain lake. On the way, I'll tell you about the importance of nature and the time spent in it for Norwegians and how this manifests itself in everyday life. We then take the train back down to the city.
Part 2
On a subsequent city tour, we will stroll through the narrow streets of the Hanseatic district of Bryggen and visit the fish market, where you will learn more about the long tradition of the market and the Norwegian fishing industry. On our walk we also "meet" personalities such as the composer Edvard Grieg and the playwright Henrik Ibsen. On this walk through Bergen's city center, I would also like to introduce you to the people who live here.
Part 3
Local cuisine allows you to immerse yourself in the soul of a country with all your senses. I realize this myself on every trip I take. The ingredients used and the way they are prepared say a lot about a country. Norway's national dishes, regional specialties and festive cuisine are very different from that of German-speaking countries. It is characterized by preservation methods that were necessary in the past and food that comes from the sea and local agriculture.
Over a light lunch with typical Norwegian specialties in our cosy event room (an old warehouse) in the Hanseatic district of Bryggen, you will learn more about the peculiarities of the Norwegian way of life and food culture.
If you would like to get to know Bergen and Norway in a very personal way, I would be delighted to welcome you on one of my guided tours. Let me show you my Bergen.
Practical information about the tour:
Difficulty level of the tour - The distance we cover on the hike on Mount Floyen and the city walk together is approx. 3.5 km. As the tour also takes place in bad weather (with rain and cold temperatures), it is important to take this into consideration when booking. People with walking difficulties should not take part in this tour.
Weather / Clothing - When traveling to Norway, it is generally important to be well prepared for all weather conditions. Even in the summer months, it can only be 10 to 15 degrees on some days, with wind and rain. Wind and rainproof clothing should therefore not be missing from your luggage. But don't worry, even in Bergen the sun comes out from time to time. Please pay attention to the weather forecast for the time of the tour and come in appropriate clothing. You can learn from the Norwegians that even if the weather is bad and you are well prepared, you will not be deterred from going out into nature. As the saying goes: "There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing".
Food - Lunch will be typically Norwegian and there will be one course each of fish, meat and Norwegian cheese. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate participants' allergies, but there will be a vegetarian option as an alternative to the fish and meat course.
Please enter the following in the comments field when booking if you would like the vegetarian alternative instead of fish or meat: For example, booking for 2 participants (one person is vegetarian): 1x vegetarian instead of meat, 1x vegetarian instead of fish.
