Driving from Trondheim to Bergen takes you through some of Norway's most beautiful areas and gives you a good insight into the Norwegian fjord landscapes and the spectacular mountains. Visit some of the world's most amazing fjords and charming villages along the way.
By car from Trondheim to Bergen, it takes around eleven hours. Driving to Bergen is a great way to experience the vast country of Norway with all its spectacular scenery. Driving gives you the flexibility to explore and stop to enjoy nature, cities and settlements.

From Trondheim to Bergen, the fastest way is to take the E6 across Dovrefjell, Jotunheimen and further on the E16 towards Bergen. This route takes about 10 hours.
After about 4.5 hours drive from Trondheim you get Jotunheimen National Park with its high mountain peaks, glaciers and mighty nature. Here you will also find Norway's highest mountain Galdhøpiggen. A natural stop here is the town of Lom which has the status of a national park village and is the gateway to the national parks Jotunheimen, Breheimen and Reinheimen.
Continue south for about 3 hours and you will get to the fjord village Flåm. Flåm is one of the most famous fjord villages in Norway and is located along the Sognefjord. It is a perfect place to stop and enjoy the scenery, take a fjord tour or go on one of the world’s most beautiful train rides; Flåmsbanen, which goes up the steep slopes towards Myrdal.
Gudvangen, not too far from Flåm, is also well worth a stop. Visit the Viking village Njardarheim where you can experience how the Vikings lived over 1000 years ago. From Gudvangen it is just over 2 hours left before you reach Bergen via Voss. Read more about things to see and do in Voss here.

This route between Trondheim and Bergen takes you via Stryn and Geiranger. That trip takes around 11 hours and takes you through fantastic fjord landscape. After about 3 hours of driving from Trondheim, you reach Dombås, which is known for its cross-country trails and hiking areas in three national parks; Rondane, Dovre and Dovrefjell.
Take a detour via Norwegian Scenic Route Gamle Strynefjellsvegen for extra nice views, and after 3 hours from Dombås you will reach Stryn, Olden and Loen.

Here you can take the Loen skylift or if you stay overnight you can hike the Loen via Ferrata and climb on the outside of the mountains right up to 1011 meters above sea level. You can also take a short detour through the Geirangerfjord on the road and see one of Norway's most spectacular fjords.

Further along the route, Førde is a nice little place to stop on the road, it is only 2 hours from Loen and only about 3 hours and 15 minutes away from Bergen.
If you have seen enough of deep fjords and high mountains, you can take the route along the coast. It takes a little longer, about 14 hours, but on the other hand, there are some iconic Norwegian cities on route.
From Trondheim you drive for 3.5 hours to Kristiansund, before heading towards the Atlantic Road. Named one of the world's most beautiful car journeys, the Atlantic Road is a spectacular sight and spans eight bridges out to the open sea.

After taking in the sights, the tour countinues for just under an hour to Molde, where you can literally stop and smell the roses, or take a detour to Trollstigen and Romsdalseggen. Then it is only 2 hours to Ålesund, an absolute must to see.
After exploring Ålesund, and if you do not plan a detour via Geiranger, it is only 2.5 hours to Stryn where you can take the fastest route to Bergen.
Besides to drive from Trondheim to Bergen, you can take the Hurtigruten Coastal Voyager. This world famous cruise between Bergen in south and Kirkenes in the north has several stops along route. On the northbound route, Hurtigruten visits cities like Ålesund, Trondheim and Tromsø.
If time is of essence you can also fly between Trondheim and Bergen. From Bergen Airport Flesland, it is easy to get to Bergen city center either by Airport bus or Bergen Light rail.
There are no trains between Bergen and Trondheim.
